Prediction: Wright to retain chair

The four new members of County Commission – Evelyn Gill, Carson Dailey, Hugh Nystrom and Michele Carringer – got a break when they were sworn in Sept. 1. The only thing they had to do after they were sworn in last week was nibble on snacks supplied by Sheriff Jimmy “JJ” Jones. They’ll eat more jailhouse food than anybody but convicts over the next four years.

They’ll have their next taste of Jones’ cuisine at their first real meeting – an organizational session called for 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, for the purpose of selecting leaders and making committee assignments. The politicking that surrounds such events has given them a taste of what’s to come.

Reasons for Martin Daniel’s win

State Rep. Martin Daniel surprised most observers with his strong win for renomination in the GOP primary last week. He more than doubled his victory margin from two years ago. Despite missteps over the past four months which generated countless stories, he prevailed. Why?

First, his major opponent, former state Rep. Steve Hall, whom he had ousted in 2014, was back again, and few people wanted him back. Hall had little electoral appeal.

Beavers may chair GOP delegation

Knoxville resident Susan Richardson Williams, a Jeb Bush candidate for delegate on March 1, was appointed as an alternate for Donald Trump by the GOP state committee at its April 2 meeting. Williams has served on the UT Board of Trustees, TVA Board of Directors and as commissioner of personnel under Gov. Lamar Alexander. She will serve along with former state Sen. Stacey Campfield as an alternate for Trump.

Other Knoxville residents going to the GOP national convention as delegates and alternates include former Sheriff Tim Hutchinson for Trump, Sam Maynard for Trump, Ken Gross for Trump, Karen Brown alternate for Cruz, this writer for Rubio, Michael Hensley for Rubio, Party chair Ryan Haynes for Rubio, Ted Hatfield alternate for Trump, Mike Arms alternate for Rubio and Gov. Bill Haslam for Rubio. Former Knoxville resident and UT student body president Steve Gill is a Cruz delegate.
