Is Rogero eyeing Duncan’s seat?

State Sen. Doug Overbey, who is looking at a 2018 race for governor, says he “has strong reservations” on philosophical grounds over indexing the proposed gas tax increase without legislative action as recommended by Gov. Bill Haslam.

Indexing gas to the Consumer Price Index would place a gas tax increase on automatic pilot. This appears contrary to what most principled conservative lawmakers would favor in terms of voting each time a tax increases. It appears this provision will be dropped if the gas tax has a chance to pass.

U.S. Rep. John J. “Jimmy” Duncan Jr. hasn’t occupied center stage in Tennessee’s 2nd Congressional District for 26 years without connecting to his audience, as he demonstrates in his recent “Washington Report.”

Unlike Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report,” the “t” in Duncan’s mailer is enunciated. However, it does compare to Colbert in sheer zaniness.

What will Jimmy do?

This is a special time of year for Congressional representatives. Election winners can chill for several weeks before beginning 22 months of fundraising for the next contest.

For U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr., “Jimmy” to his admiring constituents, campaign finance is almost an afterthought. A breakfast here, a luncheon there, a boat cruise, a reception for some well-heeled donors and he’s good to go.
