Lowe fallout ripples across state

Former Knox County Trustee Mike Lowe entered the Knox County Detention Center April 11 to begin a one-year term he plea-bargained for stealing at least $200,000 while in office.

Now auditors are tightening up personnel practices statewide in the wake of Lowe’s plea and a jury conviction of his employee Delbert Morgan, who was paid for time not worked. This case has dramatized the random personnel practices of elected officials across the state.

City staffers form private business

Lance Campbell, who has been the city’s real estate manager for less than two years, is leaving the city within the week. Not clear why he is leaving so soon. But it is clear he has been in business with Doug Gordon, who is the city’s delinquent tax attorney in the city law department and is responsible for identifying tax-delinquent properties.

Gordon and Campbell are the two members of Box Turtle Properties, which is a corporation formed Sept. 11, 2014.

Allen sets low bar for ‘tough on crime’

Lots of folks are wondering how former Knox County Trustee Mike Lowe got such a light sentence after pleading guilty to theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars from county taxpayers.

While he got 10 years, he serves only one year, which will be reduced to seven months assuming good behavior. He was assessed a $200,000 fine, but no schedule was announced for paying it over the next 10 years. What happens if he fails to pay in a timely manner or at all?

Remembering Edward Brooke

The death of Edward W. Brooke, first African-American elected to the U.S. Senate (Massachusetts), makes astronaut John Glenn the oldest living former U.S. senator at 93. He lives in Columbus, Ohio, and has an office at Ohio State University.

The next oldest living former senators are, in order of age: Ernest Hollings, 93, from South Carolina; Jocelyn Burdick of North Dakota, 92; Paul Laxalt from Nevada, 92; James Buckley from New York, 91; and Bob Dole from Kansas, 91.
