Sidewalk issue won’t go away

The fate of the much-publicized effort for a new sidewalk in West Hills along Sheffield from Wesley Road over to Vanosdale is not good for this year’s city budget as both Mayor Rogero and Vice Mayor Duane Grieve (who represents West Hills) are not supporting its inclusion in the budget.

This is a case where term limits work against the voters who no longer have a voice in the political future of Grieve or Rogero. They leave office respectively in 2017 and 2019.

Stirring up trouble

Shopper columnist Victor Ashe got a few folks upset with his prediction last week that West Hills residents would get the sidewalk they requested with a 7:30 a.m. walk on Sheffield Drive from Wesley Road to West Hills Elementary School on Vanosdale.

Ashe pointed to safety concerns and support from three members of City Council: Vice Mayor Duane Grieve, George Wallace and Marshall Stair.

Chances good for West Hills sidewalk

West Hills residents should not and probably will not accept delay on getting their sidewalk built for Sheffield Drive from Wesley Road to Vanosdale. With Vice Mayor Duane Grieve as well as two potential mayoral candidates, George Wallace and Marshall Stair, supporting the effort, they can achieve results.

If necessary they can amend the city budget. It is a significant safety issue. While Mayor Madeline Rogero did not attend the walk in West Hills, she is smart enough to know this issue could have traction and may agree to adding it to her budget on her own.
